the barista and the photographer
(alcove coffee)
Located in Toronto's trendy junction neighbourhood, a once derelict mechanics shop was transformed into a pocket coffee shop / photographers studio.
Acting as a stop for creative types using the studio and working in the industrial area, the buildings once cavernous spaces were reconfigured around a skewed shipping container which housed the cafe kitchen and serving bar. This volume creates at once a pinch-point to the intimate cafe space and the more open reception area to the studio itself all punctuated with a bold black and yellow palette, barn board, industrial metal and penny tiling detailing.
The photographic studio space incorporates a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen and opens to the spacious studio beyond, with a subdued palette of greys and wood. a curving black-slat volume reaches up revealing the studio offices above.
